Why This Protocol Works
Sleep onset is gated by core body temperature. As your core temperature drops in the late evening, the thermic decline signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus to initiate the slow-wave sleep cascade. An evening sauna briefly raises core temperature and then triggers a faster, deeper rebound drop — measured increases in slow-wave sleep and reductions in sleep onset latency in the Laukkanen cohort.
The window matters: two to three hours before bed is the sweet spot. Too close (under one hour) and core temperature is still elevated when you try to fall asleep. Too far (four-plus hours ahead) and the rebound dissipates before sleep pressure builds.
How to Execute It
Traditional sauna at 75°C (167°F) for 15 minutes, one round only. Finish with a lukewarm shower — not ice cold — and head to bed ninety minutes to two hours later. Three sessions per week is enough to feel the sleep effect.
Avoid the late-night timing trap. A session within an hour of bed leaves you too hot to fall asleep. If your evening window closes earlier than that, run the protocol with a slightly cooler temperature (70°C) so the rebound lands sooner.
