Why This Protocol Works

This is the recovery day routine: lower intensity, shorter bouts, timed right after training. Scoon et al. (2007) showed that post-exercise sauna exposure increased plasma volume and time-to-exhaustion in trained athletes over a three-week block — the acute effect is vasodilation-driven perfusion that pulls lactate out of fatigued muscle.

Infrared is the right sauna type here. It transfers heat more efficiently at lower air temperatures, which means you get the muscle-warming effect without the systemic stress of 85°C. You finish the session feeling recovered, not drained.

How to Execute It

Finish your last training set, wait 10–15 minutes for your breathing to come down, then start the infrared sauna at 70°C (158°F). Stay 15 minutes. One round only — exit, cool down with a brief shower, rehydrate.

Pair this protocol with your hardest training days. Two sauna days on the same week as three to four high-intensity sessions gives you the recovery signal without stacking heat exposure. If you also follow the Cardiovascular or Longevity protocol, schedule the recovery sessions on different days so the heat load doesn't compound.
